Why do you do what you do?

Another KineticFuture book club recommendation we’d like to share with you, from Vincent Byrne at Vincent Byrne Consulting.

Simon Sinek is a British-American author and motivational speaker, and organizational consultant. He is the author of four books, including “Start With Why.”

Goodreads says:

Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. It was their natural ability to start with why that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things.

In studying the leaders who’ve had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way — and it’s the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not money or profit — those are always results. WHY does your organization exist? WHY does it do the things it does? WHY do customers really buy from one company or another? WHY are people loyal to some leaders, but not others?

Starting with WHY works in big business and small business, in the nonprofit world and in politics. Those who start with WHY never manipulate, they inspire. And the people who follow them don’t do so because they have to; they follow because they want to.

Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, Sinek weaves together a clear vision of what it truly takes to lead and inspire. This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.

3 Weird Confidence Cheats

No matter how senior or expert we are, there’s something (or someone!) that makes us twitch. We curated a ‘collection’ of 50 quick confidence boosts. Here’s 3 of the weird ones to try. If you’d like leadership coaching 1-2-1 or communications coaching for meetings and presentations give us a call.

Remember, weird is good!

  1. Feel the pain – divert attention from your fear by putting tiny pieces of gravel in the front of your shoes. Scrunch your toes from time to time.
  2. Secret escapes – choose a secret to take into the room with you, how will you behave now? E.g. The secret is you are a spy or about to be made CEO.
  3. What if? – imagine you are talking to Man City FC owners in the bar after winning the League. How will you now stand, and talk and be? Go in with that purpose.

Do Fear Messages Really Work?

We were debating this question at a presentation workshop I ran last week. It’s an important issue whether you are Extinction Rebellion or you are talking about a tough issue with your team or customers. The answer is surprising.

The answer is yes and no.

Fear works well to gain attention. The Extinction Rebellion rallies really make me sit up. They create great stories to tell.

But if you want people to act you need to move sharply into action-oriented messages, or they will switch off. If we are bombarded with just negativity, it all becomes too difficult and too overwhelming, so we talk a lot, but we do nothing.

It’s also about setting out specific and easy first steps. First steps so we can see the reward. So, to stick with the environmental theme – the articles you see about ‘5 Things You Can Do Today’ are positive and helpful. (But they need to be told with more oomph!)

The interesting kicker on all this is that if what you are suggesting does not resonate with someone’s values, social norms or things that are important to them it won’t work. The coal industry in Australia has tried positive messaging but this has been very much received as spin soundbites. Gosh. Perhaps that means we do see through fake news? Now there’s a thought.

If you would like to tell your story to encourage awareness and to change behaviour or to build your confidence and executive presence for meetings, presentations or for difficult conversations, do contact us. We will help you build a powerful communications strategy and an engaging way of telling the story for the occasion as well as working with you on your vocal energy and physical presence.

I Think Too Much

Do you lie awake at three in the morning with annoying work thoughts whizzing around your head?

Ironically, the solution could be making more time to think productively during the day. Call us if you’d like to be coached in a Thinking Environment. You’ll find it exciting, transformative and that it delivers results quickly.

Simple Top Tip For Today

I found an old notebook yesterday which listed my own big work dilemmas that were whizzing around my head at the time. I was amazed to realise that they didn’t bother me now. This was a direct result of being coached myself in a Thinking Environment. But here’s a simple tip to access your best thinking right now working with a trusted colleague.

-Sit down with someone you trust in private, in a place which communicates you are valuable. Set aside 20 minutes.

-Agree with your partner who is the ‘thinking partner’ and who is the ‘coach’.

-Agree that the ‘coach’ will never ever interrupt or suggest solutions and will listen intently with warmth, ease, encouragement, non-judgement, genuine curiosity and 100% confidentiality (no compromises!) This is the thinking environment.

  • Get comfortable
  • The ‘coach’ asks, “what would you like to think about and what are your thoughts?”
  • The thinker thinks, pauses, thinks, speaks or doesn’t speak. They are thinking. The ‘coach’ has the privilege of seeing the agility of the brain at work.
  • The ‘coach’ maintains the thinking environment.
  • When they’ve finished thinking, the ‘thinker’ writes down any notes and you appreciate each other.

See what happens! It could be the best thinking you have done in a very long time.

If you would like to be coached by us in a Thinking Environment we’d love to talk.
