What Are You Wearing?

It’s useful to re-evaluate what you wear to work if you are stepping into a new role, whether you are male or female.  You can get professional help to make it a reality – useful if you are busy, don’t like shopping or keep making costly mistakes.

What you wear is an important part of your leadership communications strategy.  Humans assess visual information in seconds.  Use it to your advantage not a hindrance.

First of all ask yourself how you want to be perceived as a leader in your new role – internally and externally?

It really boils down to what you want to communicate as a brand – you as an individual and you as a representative of your company.

For example if you are a leader of a retail organisation promoting innovation and creativity, does what you wear today support this message?  Equally, if you are a senior corporate lawyer what can you wear to help you win the confidence of your clients?

You’ll also need a flexible set of clothes.  Not just for variety (people will be watching you) but practicality too.  Big stage presentations, video, TV, internal informal chats, customer meetings, shareholder meetings, board meetings all require a slightly different approach.

The right clothes, accessories, hair and grooming can support you, your vision and brand message.  They can boost your confidence, help you look taller, thinner, younger, more authoritative or more approachable.  It’s a question of being aware of what’s working now and all the subtle things you can do that make a big difference.
