Why do you do what you do?

Another KineticFuture book club recommendation we’d like to share with you, from Vincent Byrne at Vincent Byrne Consulting.

Simon Sinek is a British-American author and motivational speaker, and organizational consultant. He is the author of four books, including “Start With Why.”

Goodreads says:

Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. It was their natural ability to start with why that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things.

In studying the leaders who’ve had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way — and it’s the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not money or profit — those are always results. WHY does your organization exist? WHY does it do the things it does? WHY do customers really buy from one company or another? WHY are people loyal to some leaders, but not others?

Starting with WHY works in big business and small business, in the nonprofit world and in politics. Those who start with WHY never manipulate, they inspire. And the people who follow them don’t do so because they have to; they follow because they want to.

Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, Sinek weaves together a clear vision of what it truly takes to lead and inspire. This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.

3 Weird Confidence Cheats

No matter how senior or expert we are, there’s something (or someone!) that makes us twitch. We curated a ‘collection’ of 50 quick confidence boosts. Here’s 3 of the weird ones to try. If you’d like leadership coaching 1-2-1 or communications coaching for meetings and presentations give us a call.

Remember, weird is good!

  1. Feel the pain – divert attention from your fear by putting tiny pieces of gravel in the front of your shoes. Scrunch your toes from time to time.
  2. Secret escapes – choose a secret to take into the room with you, how will you behave now? E.g. The secret is you are a spy or about to be made CEO.
  3. What if? – imagine you are talking to Man City FC owners in the bar after winning the League. How will you now stand, and talk and be? Go in with that purpose.

The Secret Language of Leadership

This week’s book club recommendation comes from Simon Lancaster, one of the world’s top speechwriters. Simon’s book, ‘Winning Minds, Secrets from the Language of Leadership’ blends ancient rhetoric and neuroscience to create the definitive guide to the language of leadership.

This book is a wonderful resource! We use it as part of our KineticFuture Leadership Communications Coaching and Courses and always recommend Simon as a speech writer.

The opening paragraph talks about Boris Johnson’s opening speech at the London Olympics, when everyone came together to celebrate Great Britain and our achievements in putting on such an amazing event. The crowd and the whole country were buzzing.

Simon says:

“There is a secret language of leadership – a secret set of physical, verbal and vocal cues and signals that has existed for tens of thousands of years which still determines who makes it to the top in business and politics today.”

Some quotes from Amazon:

“Winning Minds lays bare with shocking clarity the simple techniques that great communicators use to manipulate our emotions. Give them a go and unleash your hidden leader!” – Peter Wanless, CEO, NSPCC

“Simon’s book unlocks the secret of how to be a world-class communicator and leader in a book that is as entertaining as it is packed with know-how.” – Darren Childs, UKTV Media

Calling All Library Lovers

I have a spring in my step, it must be the milder weather, plus the fact that I recently graduated as a Time to Think Coach after a year of hard slog, hooray!

I qualified as a business coach eight years ago, but this has transformed the results I achieve. It was pioneered by Nancy Kline (Founder & President of The Time to Think Organisation), whom I was lucky enough to meet at my graduation day (cheesy photo below!) Nancy is also the author of this week’s book club recommendation, ‘More Time to Think’.

Left to right: Ruth McCarthy (my Time to Think coach), me, Nancy Kline (Founder & President of The Time to Think Organisation)

Time to think coaching will be relevant to team members you want to coach 1-2-1, perhaps thinking about a new role, business relationship or their executive presence. And of course, we incorporate elements of this type of coaching into all our group communications courses.

Drop us an email if you’d like a quick chat about how I can help you with your own challenges.

More Time to Think by Nancy Kline

Amazon says:

“The quality of everything we do depends on the quality of the thinking we do first. The leaders, professionals, parents and teachers who understand this are at the top of their fields and inspire some of the finest independent thinking in their environments.

In More Time to Think, Nancy Kline shares ten effective ways to help people think for themselves with rigour, imagination, courage and grace. From learning that the mind works best in the presence of a question (so never be afraid to risk being wrong) and that a key factor in the quality of a person’s thinking is how they are treated by the people with them while they are thinking, to the importance of appreciation and of facing what you have been denying, Nancy Kline shows how to create a successful Thinking Environment, whether for two people or a larger group.”
