Thrive this Christmas!

It’s less than a week until Christmas and we really hope you’re starting to wind down and look forward to taking time out to be with friends and family.

We recently asked for book recommendations that were the secret of your success – thank you so much to everyone that replied.

This week’s book was recommended to us by Sarah Mieszkian from Button, Business Marketing & Admin Support.

Arianna Huffington, the co-founder and editor in chief of the Huffington Post has written a passionate call to arms in her book ‘Thrive’, looking to redefine what it means to be successful in today’s world.

Sarah says:

The book that has had an impact on me is ‘Thrive’ by Arianna Huffington. Arianna was one of the first high powered women to come out and say “enough is enough” and you don’t have to work all hours to be successful. Taking time out for you is just as important. It has become the normal narrative today but when I read this several years ago it was certainly an eye raiser.

‘Thrive’ has great reviews on Amazon:

Drawing on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging and giving, Arianna shows us the way to a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplaces, and our lives.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! Today’s book club recommendation helps you overcome fears and boost your resilience. There are no remedies for ghouls in your garden, but great tips you can apply to work and home. We like them so much we’ve incorporated them in our executive presence, presenting and resilience courses. Enjoy!

Today’s book ‘The Resilience Factor’ is recommended by our colleague Jan Stannard, Positive Leadership, who is a top resilience coach. Jan trained with the author Karen Reivich, PhD and her colleague Martin Seligman as part of her work with Wellington College. The book is based on strong research from psychology and neuroscience. Critically, it’s very practical for work and home. With “7 keys to finding your inner strength and overcoming life’s hurdles”.

KineticFuture Book Club – You Don’t Want to Hear This

Welcome back to the KineticFuture Book Club!

This is a fantastic book that I will be recommending again and again on our new Executive Presence group course and in my one to one coaching. For me, its key message is be open and be yourself and you will boost your executive presence.

It comes from vulnerability researcher, Brené Brown and it’s called ‘Daring Greatly’.  I read it cover to cover without stopping. And then started reading it again. Only stopped by accidently smashing my iPad!

This book could have been written about me and for me. Judging by the millions of people that follow Brené on Ted, many men and women feel the same way.

In essence, it’s about daring to be yourself, not hiding and using strategies to help you stay courageous under fire. It’s about being more successful and happier. The way she tells the story is moving and hilarious. She struggles on the journey too. Her research work is exemplary. There’s no BS here. This is a book for men, women, the relentlessly ambitious and those already happy with their life today.

KineticFuture Book Club – Executive Presence by Sylvia Ann Hewlett

Welcome to the KineticFuture book club!

We thought we’d share with you our recommended reading list from the area of positive leadership and resilience, combining neuroscience, positivity and communications skills.

Starting with ‘Executive Presence, the Missing Link Between Merit and Success’ by Sylvia Ann Hewlett.

Sylvia Ann Hewlett, a noted expert on workplace power and influence, shows you how to identify and embody the executive presence that you need to succeed. You can have the experience and qualifications of a leader, but without executive presence, you won’t advance.

Based on a nationwide survey of college graduates working across a range of sectors and occupations, Sylvia Hewlett and the Centre for Talent Innovation discovered that executive presence is a dynamic, cohesive mix of appearance, communication, and gravitas. While these elements are not equal, to have true executive presence, you must know how to use all of them to your advantage.

Filled with eye-opening insights, analysis, and practical advice for both men and women, mixed with illustrative examples from executives learning to use the executive presence, this book will help you make the leap from working like an executive to feeling like an executive.

Frustration Buster Part 3 – The Happiness Trap

This is a fascinating book by Russ Harris. It’s a programme based on ACT: a mindfulness-based approach to overcoming anxiety and stress.  He uses great day to day analogies we can all relate to with lots of practical quizzes, worksheets and exercises too.

The central idea is that it’s more effective to observe any unhelpful thoughts or feelings rather than try to control them or fight them. And then to ensure that you act on your values.

I’m finding the ideas helpful for me and for the leaders I coach. Try them out for your next presentation, big meeting or challenging conversation.

Here are some simple tips from the first part of the book to help you de-fuse those frustrations or anxious thoughts:

  1. Notice the thought or feeling is there
  2. Observe it, don’t fight it or challenge it
  3. Say ‘thanks mind’ or ‘thanks for sharing’. Notice what happens, or
  4. Pick a favourite cartoon character or movie character like Brian’s mum in ‘The Life of Brian’, (my favourite!), bring it to mind and ‘hear’ the thought in that voice. Notice what happens.

You can use these ideas yourself for day to day worries. The ACT programme is also used by counsellors to help with depression. Buy ‘The Happiness Trap’ by Russ Harris on Amazon here.
