One of the challenges senior leaders face is how to communicate who they are, their values and purpose. They also need to align with the corporate brand and purpose. It’s not always a perfect fit.
We worked with an up and coming leader preparing for his first big sales and marketing conference. He wanted to introduce himself as a human leader, show executive presence and inspire his people to dream bigger. He was very clear on what his audience would value.
We always start with coaching people to be clear on who they are, their values and their purpose. This works on two levels. Firstly, it helps the person understand their strengths and blocks to achieving their goals. Secondly, it starts to reveal the story that the person wants to tell about who they are and what is important to them.
We all want to see humanity from our leaders. We like to see more than the corporate face. We are much more likely to live the company purpose if we can see how you do it.
Whatever you say has to be authentic and real. It needs to help us feel something different. That’s what people remember.
During the first part of the coaching, we listened to the language he used to describe himself and spotted where there was authentic passion and energy. We also listened out for the stories he told naturally as he went through the brainstorm process.
Then our client looked at the brainstorm sheets on the wall and became extremely animated about what he wanted to say and the stories he wanted to tell. When I get a tingle in my arms, I know we’re on the right track. We then managed to write a first outline for the presentation in 40 minutes – structure, stories and proof points.
Our client had lived and breathed how to tell his story and his purpose. It was totally his creation. Communicating on stage then became 100% easier and more effective.
