Energising leaders are four times more influential and produce stronger performance. So leaders need to manage and feed their own energy levels to keep going.
Here are a few ideas on how to engineer small doses of what works for you every day.
- Work out who and what energises you personally. We’re all different. Make a list. Work hard to replenish your energy every day.
- Worst First. Tackle the things you dread first or they will sap your energy.
- Engineer your diary to have a discussion with someone who energises you – preferably face to face but phone and even a text conversation is better than nothing.
- Mix up your day to include ‘treats’ – you may enjoy brainstorming, a quiet time away from it all, work on a specific project, a walk outside, listen to music, go home and hug someone you love, read something that makes you laugh, take some exercise.
- Show kindness and appreciation to someone else.
- Work with your brain not against it. Do your planning first in the morning when the adult brain is fresh. Don’t waste that time doing routine emails. Make sure your objective is clear before you start work. Focus on solutions not problems. Try to chunk down the challenge into no more than 4 areas. Work in 15-20 minute boosts. Vary the type of work between planning, creative and physical. Get up and walk about.
- When you go home, write a What Went Well Diary. You’ll be amazed at all the small things that go well or things we’ve enjoyed which get blanked out by one negative thing at the end of the day.
“Energising” simply means if I have a conversation with you do I leave feeling energised or de-energised.
